What Is a Linear Foot?

A linear foot (LF or ln ft) is simply 12 inches of length measured in a straight line. Unlike square feet โ€” which measures area โ€” linear feet only cares about distance. If you have a 10-foot board, it's 10 linear feet regardless of whether it's 4 inches wide or 12 inches wide. This is the key concept: linear feet ignores width entirely.

Contractors use linear feet for materials sold by length: fencing, trim, baseboard, gutters, pipe, wire, and countertops. Lumber yards use board feet (volume), while flooring stores use square feet (area). Knowing when to use which measurement saves you from ordering the wrong quantity โ€” a mistake that costs time, money, and extra trips to the supply house.
